5.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Coast of Crete

The quake occurred south of Lasithi and was felt across a wide area due to its strength.

A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Crete in the early hours of Friday, 24 April, with the epicentre located south of the Lasithi region.

According to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.7 and was located 25 kilometres south south west of Goudouras in Lasithi, around 405 kilometres south south east of the Greek capital.

The focal depth was measured at 9.7 kilometres, placing the quake in the sea relatively close to the coast.

A subsequent tremor measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale was recorded in the wider area, with seismologists monitoring the aftershock sequence.

Following the quake, an alert message from the emergency number 112 was issued across Crete as well as on the island of Santorini.
