Activists from various countries set sail on Sunday from Sicily, aiming to reach the Gaza Strip aboard dozens of vessels carrying humanitarian aid.

After a delay caused by adverse weather conditions, 56 boats departed from a port near Syracuse, according to the organising group Global Sumud Flotilla, which said this was the largest number of vessels to take part so far in an effort to deliver aid to the Palestinian enclave.

The fleet is being accompanied by a vessel from the Spanish NGO Open Arms, as well as Greenpeace’s Arctic Sunrise
