Midsummer Rain in Cyprus: Skies Open Over Nicosia Mountains as Yellow Warning Takes Effect

Videos shared by weather enthusiasts capture an unusual scene for July, with storm intensity locally expected to exceed 35mm per hour.

Residents in various parts of the Nicosia mountain region recorded midsummer rainfall on Monday, with videos shared on Facebook through the group "Kairofili Kyprou" (Cyprus Weather Enthusiasts) capturing a scene unusual for the season.

Yellow warning in force until 6pm

The summer rainfall comes as the Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for isolated heavy thunderstorms, in force from 12:00 until 18:00 today. According to the Department, unstable weather conditions are expected to affect the mountains, the interior and the north of the island, while rainfall intensity may locally exceed 35 millimetres per hour.

Afternoon forecast

According to the weather forecast, the region is affected by seasonal low pressure and unstable conditions. Locally increased cloud cover is expected at intervals in the afternoon, with developing clouds set to bring local rain and isolated thunderstorms, mainly over the mountains, the interior and the north.

Winds will be mainly southwesterly to northwesterly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, strengthening later to 4 to 5 Beaufort in the south. The sea will be slight to moderate.

Overnight conditions

Increased low cloud will be observed at intervals tonight, with patchy mist or fog expected to form locally. Temperatures will drop to 22C inland, around 23C on the coast and 18C in the higher mountains.
