Police have arrested a 19-year-old to assist inquiries into an incident in Limassol on 9 July that left an officer with minor injuries. According to a police statement, the events unfolded after a member of the Limassol Traffic Police Team Zsignalled the driver of an unmarked double-cab vehicle, which was not carrying registration plates, to stop for a check.

How the incident unfolded

The incident took place at 4.30pm on 9 July. Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated and drove recklessly and dangerously, jumping a red traffic light and committing a series of traffic offences.

At one point on a Limassol road, the driver stopped and then reversed into the service motorcycle following behind, injuring the officer. The officer used his service pistol and fired three shots at the tyres of the vehicle, which nevertheless fled in an unknown direction.

The injured officer was taken to Limassol General Hospital, where he received first aid and was discharged.

Arrest and charges

During the investigation, and after collecting and evaluating evidence, testimony was secured concerning a 19-year-old, against whom a court arrest warrant was issued. Officers located him at around 11.15pm on Friday near a double-cab vehicle parked outside his home in Limassol. On seeing the officers, he attempted to flee but was stopped and arrested under the pending warrant.

The man was taken to the offices of the Limassol CID, where he was placed in custody. He is being investigated for the offences of reckless and dangerous driving, failing to stop at the signal of a uniformed officer, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, and others.

The double-cab vehicle was seized and held as evidence for the purposes of police examinations. The Limassol CID is continuing its inquiries.
