Priority will be given to areas facing an increased risk of fires, three ministries said in a joint announcement.

The Council of Ministers on Thursday approved emergency financial support of €1 million to communities for the clean-up of uncontrolled waste dumping sites, following a joint proposal by the Ministers of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Interior, and Transport, Communications and Works.

Aims of the funding

According to a joint announcement issued by the three ministries on Friday, the funding is intended to protect the environment and public health and to strengthen fire prevention through the removal of illegally dumped waste. Although responsibility for identifying and clearing illegal dumping sites lies with Local Authorities under current legislation, the Government is continuing to support them financially for a third consecutive year, recognising that the prompt removal of waste is a critical condition for protecting the environment, public health and preventing fires.

Over €3.2 million since 2024

The announcement notes that €1,001,550.65 was allocated in 2024 and €1,219,586.35 in 2025 for clean-ups of illegal dumping sites under the #WasteFreeCyprus campaign. With the new approval of €1 million, total financial support granted since 2024 now stands at €3,221,137.

How the funds will be distributed

The new funding will be allocated to the Community Services Clusters and Community Councils for the clean-up of sites designated by the competent authorities, with priority given to areas presenting an increased risk of fires.

Additional to fire prevention measures

The ministries clarified that the emergency support of €1 million is additional to the €4.16 million already approved by the Government for 2026 under fire prevention measures in communities, further strengthening actions to protect the natural environment and human life.
