Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman held a one-hour meeting with President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides on Tuesday, according to a public statement posted by Mr Erhürman on social media. As he noted, the discussion focused on confidence-building measures and the methodology of the process.
Focus on confidence-building measures and trust
The Turkish Cypriot leader said that, for a significant part of the meeting, he conveyed the Turkish Cypriot side's positions on actions, both internal and external, which he argued are not helping efforts to reach agreement on new confidence-building measures and are eroding even the trust that already exists.
Mr Erhürman stressed that, for the process to move forward, it is necessary to create the "favourable climate" referred to by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. According to him, this requires, on the one hand, the implementation of new confidence-building measures and, on the other, the avoidance of actions that damage trust between the two sides.
New meeting without Holguín
Tufan Erhürman also said that the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy, María Ángela Holguín, will not be able to be in Cyprus before the UN General Assembly due to illness.
The next meeting, he noted, is expected to take place probably in about a week, without Ms Holguín present. The exact day and time, he added, will be determined by representatives of the two sides.
