The municipality’s first managed beach aims to improve access and services while keeping the area affordable and inclusive.

The first organised beach operated by the Municipality of Kourion has officially opened at Ladies Mile, offering improved facilities, accessibility and low-cost services for swimmers.

Mayor Pantelis Georgiou said the project aims to serve as a model for similar developments along the coastline between the area’s restaurants.

The beach, located between the fourth and fifth restaurants, has been developed under a beach use plan approved by the British Bases Environment Department, given the environmentally sensitive nature of the area. From Friday, the site offers 100 umbrellas and 200 sunbeds for public use.

A key feature of the new facility is accessibility. The beach has been adapted for people with mobility difficulties, including the installation of a special wheelchair and ramp allowing access to the sea. Persons with disabilities are entitled to free use of sunbeds upon presentation of their card.

The cost of hiring a sunbed or umbrella has been set at €2.50, with the municipality opting to keep prices at last year’s level, below the maximum rates set by the Central Beach Committee.

Additional infrastructure is expected in the coming days, with portable toilets due to be installed from Monday to better serve visitors without relying on nearby restaurants.

At the same time, Georgiou stressed that the organised facilities will not limit the public’s right to use the beach with their own umbrellas and equipment. “There are no restrictions on what people can bring. We want to ensure everyone can enjoy the beach,” he said.

The initiative is currently in a pilot phase, with the municipality planning to assess both strengths and weaknesses before expanding the model to other approved locations under the beach management plan.

A third organised point with umbrellas and sunbeds will also operate at Kourion beach this summer, as part of a broader effort to gradually upgrade the area for visitors.
