All Eyes on Anastasiades as He Addresses “Mafia State” Findings

The former president is set to respond to corruption probe findings linked to the Mafia State report, in a press conference seen as a key moment in the ongoing public debate.

Today, attention turns to the Journalists’ House, where former President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades is expected to provide his own answers regarding the findings of the Independent Authority Against Corruption, which emerged from a two-year investigation into the book Mafia State by journalist Makarios Drousiotis.

Anastasiades has announced that during today’s press conference he will respond “comprehensively and with documentation” to all issues raised by the Authority’s findings, which recorded potential offences including, among others, influence peddling and abuse of power.

Today’s press conference is considered pivotal, as the former President is expected to present his own version of events, respond to criticism expressed in recent months, and clarify his position on findings that are now at the centre of public debate.

Potential criminal offences cited by the Authority

The potential criminal offences which the Independent Authority states may arise in relation to former President Nicos Anastasiades are:

(a) Influence peddling, as per Paragraph 63: 3 cases

(b) Abuse of power (felony), as per Paragraph 58: 1 case

(c) Abuse of power (misdemeanour), as per Paragraph 58, or attempted commission of a criminal offence, as per Paragraph 67: 3 cases
