A post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death after the infant was brought to hospital in an unresponsive state.

A 12-month-old boy died at Limassol General Hospital on Thursday night after reportedly feeling unwell and developing a fever in the preceding days.

According to information reported by Phileleftheros, the child was taken to the hospital by his father at around 10:30 p.m. in a comatose state, after earlier being at the family home.

Medical staff at the Accident and Emergency Department found the infant unconscious, not breathing, and with signs of cyanosis. Doctors and nurses attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the child was later intubated, but efforts to restore circulation were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead about an hour later.

Police were immediately informed and officers went to the hospital, where they examined the infant’s body. No external injuries were found.

Family members reportedly told authorities that the child had been unwell and had a fever since June 23. On Wednesday, the parents had taken him to a paediatrician, who diagnosed gastroenteritis and prescribed medication.

Forensic pathologist Nikolas Charalambous has been notified and is expected to carry out the post-mortem examination on Saturday to establish the exact cause of death.
