Heavy rain and thunderstorms are once again affecting mountainous and semi‑mountainous areas of Cyprus for a second consecutive day, bringing significant rainfall within a short period.
The weather phenomena are highly localised, with intense downpours recorded in inland communities and regions, while other areas across the island experience entirely different conditions.
Video footage shared on the social media group “Kairophiloi Kyprou” shows the intensity of rainfall in various parts of the island.
Seasonal low pressure and unstable weather conditions continue to affect the region. On Tuesday, the weather is expected to remain mostly clear at first, but increasing cloud formations will gradually lead to isolated showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the mountains and the interior.
Hail is also possible during thunderstorms. Winds will be mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate at three to four Beaufort, becoming strong to very strong, at five to six Beaufort, at times in the afternoon along southern and eastern coastal areas. The sea will be slightly rough, becoming rough at times in the south.
Temperatures are expected to reach 36C inland, around 32C on the coasts and 26C in higher mountainous areas.
Overnight, conditions will remain mostly clear, although periods of increased low cloud are expected, mainly along the coasts. Winds will remain south-westerly to north-westerly, generally light at three Beaufort and occasionally moderate at three to four Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough, while temperatures will drop to around 22C inland and on the coasts and 18C in higher mountain areas.
On Wednesday and Thursday, cloud build-up after midday is expected to bring isolated showers or thunderstorms, mainly in the mountains and possibly inland. By Friday, the weather will be mostly clear with some afternoon cloud over mountainous areas.
Temperatures are not expected to change significantly through to Friday, remaining close to seasonal averages.
