US President Donald Trump reposted an interview with Cyprus Energy, Commerce and Industry Minister Michalis Damianos on his Truth Social account, highlighting the minister's comments on the importance of US engagement in Eastern Mediterranean energy developments.
The post appeared in the early hours of Thursday, Cyprus time, and linked to an interview published by Breitbart News following Damianos' visit to the United States last month.
"I believe President Trump's involvement in this is vital," Damianos said, adding that Cyprus views US engagement as fundamental to energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The minister said Cyprus aims to remain a reliable partner of the United States and highlighted the strategic role of Chevron and ExxonMobil, both of which are active in Cyprus' exclusive economic zone.
Damianos noted that Cyprus is estimated to hold around 20 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves and said future production is expected to be exported largely through Egypt to European markets.
He also stressed the importance of the Cyprus-Greece-Israel-US "3+1" cooperation framework, describing both Greece and Israel as key regional partners.
Looking ahead, Damianos said Cyprus could emerge as a significant regional energy player from 2028 onwards, supported by its offshore gas reserves and close cooperation with international energy companies and the United States.
