Chief Fire Officer and General Fire Coordinator Nikos Longinos said the woman saw the individual ignite the grass using a firework before leaving in a car.

She then used water she had in her vehicle to extinguish the flames before they could spread.

“Fortunately, the woman photographed the suspect’s vehicle,” Longinos said, adding that the images were forwarded to police.

Police search under way

Police are now searching for a specific individual in connection with the incident.

“I hope he is arrested so that he can tell us why he started the fire,” Longinos said.

He made the comments during a visit by representatives of the Federation of Cypriot American Organisations to Pachna. The delegation was providing financial assistance for the purchase of protective clothing for volunteer firefighters in the wildfire-affected communities of mountainous Limassol.
