A 29-year-old motorcyclist has died following a road collision in the Larnaca district, with police naming the victim as George Georgiou from Larnaca, a married father of two young children.
The fatal crash occurred at around 7.25pm on Sunday on the Kellia-Troulloi road. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Fatal collision under investigation
According to preliminary police findings, Georgiou was riding a large-capacity motorcycle owned by another person when the collision occurred.
Police said that, under circumstances still under investigation, the motorcycle entered the opposite lane while negotiating a bend and collided head-on with a saloon vehicle.
The car was being driven by a 28-year-old woman, with a 32-year-old man in the front passenger seat and two children aged four and two travelling in the rear seats.
Victim succumbed to injuries
The motorcyclist sustained critical injuries in the collision and was transported by ambulance to Larnaca General Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries despite the efforts of medical staff.
The occupants of the vehicle were also taken to hospital for examination and treatment. Following first aid treatment, all four were discharged.
Helmet use among issues being examined
According to police, evidence gathered so far indicates that Georgiou was not wearing a protective helmet at the time of the collision.
The issue forms part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
Police also confirmed that both alcohol and drug tests conducted on the driver of the car returned negative results.
Police inquiry continues
The Larnaca Traffic Department is continuing its investigation into the fatal road collision.
George Georgiou was employed by the Larnaca District Local Government Organisation, according to the report.
