Three incidents involving fires in bins and tyres were reported at schools in the Nicosia district overnight, according to Police Spokesperson Vyron Vyronos.
No similar incidents were recorded in Cyprus’s other districts ahead of the start of the new school year.
Nationwide police operation
Vyronos told CNA that police remained on alert throughout the night and into the early morning under a specific action plan.
The plan was drawn up following a meeting at the Education Ministry in recent days, attended by all relevant authorities.
Its aim was to ensure that any activity on school grounds took place “within limits that would not cause damage, as in previous years, or any kind of disturbance or nuisance”.
“The night passed relatively smoothly, with a few minor problems,” Vyronos said. “In some cases, bins and tyres were set alight at schools, but there were only three incidents. Everything else went smoothly.”
He clarified that all three incidents occurred in the Nicosia district, although the police operation was conducted nationwide.
“We received no information about incidents in the other districts,” he said.
Checks continue at schools
Police are continuing periodic checks at schools on Monday to prevent any incidents linked to delinquent behaviour.
“So far, we have nothing to announce,” Vyronos said.
Asked whether the action plan had proved effective, he said police believed it had helped limit malicious damage and disturbances compared with previous years.
