Construction work on the first section of Faneromenis Avenue in Larnaca has been completed as part of the city's Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP).
According to information provided to the Larnaca municipality by the Public Works Department and the contractor, the completed section will remain closed until Monday, 14 September 2026, to allow for road-marking works to be carried out.
From 14 September, the reconstructed section is expected to reopen to traffic. At the same time, works will begin on the opposite carriageway of the avenue and are expected to last approximately one month.
During this phase, traffic diversions towards Nikos and Despina Pattichi Avenue will operate in the opposite direction to the current traffic arrangements.
Sustainable mobility project
The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan aims to promote public transport and improve multimodal transport links between Larnaca's urban centres through the redesign of the city's main road network.
The objectives of the project include:
- Improving road safety.
- Enhancing accessibility.
- Increasing mobility.
- Upgrading quality of life.
- Supporting economic sustainability.
Works include resurfacing and reconstruction of road surfaces, the creation of dedicated bus lanes and the installation of supporting bus-stop infrastructure.
Cycling and pedestrian improvements
The plans also include:
- Construction of cycle lanes and cycling infrastructure.
- Creation of on-street parking spaces.
- Construction and upgrading of pavements.
- Signal-controlled pedestrian and cycle crossings.
- Installation of new traffic lights and upgrades to existing systems.
- New road markings and directional signage.
Where cycle lanes are introduced, dedicated space will be allocated to cyclists on the carriageway through appropriate road markings and signage. Some roads will also include cycling infrastructure integrated into pavements.
Major upgrades across the city
The wider programme includes:
- Approximately 10km of bus lanes on key city routes.
- 22km of cycle lanes.
- 13km of pavements.
- 182 Pelican and Zebra crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.
- 174 accessibility ramps for people with disabilities.
Drainage, stormwater, water-supply and irrigation infrastructure upgrades are also planned.
A cycling network will be added along:
- Akropoleos Avenue (Aradippou).
- Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue.
- Yiannos Kranidiotis Avenue.
- Nikos and Despina Pattichi Avenue.
- Artemidos Avenue.
- Faneromenis Avenue.
- Lemesou Avenue.
Bus lanes will be created on:
- Eleftherias Street.
- Nikos and Despina Pattichi Avenue.
- Artemidos Avenue.
- Makariou Avenue.
Park and Ride stations planned
The second pillar of the SUMP programme involves the construction of Park and Ride facilities in Aradippou and Kalo Chorio.
The stations are planned near the Pascal area and the Kalo Chorio roundabout and are expected to cost around €4.4 million.
The overall value of projects being implemented under the Larnaca Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan is expected to exceed €18 million.
