Russian strikes targeted Kyiv in the early hours of Tuesday, with powerful explosions reported across the Ukrainian capital, according to local authorities and AFP correspondents.
The attacks mark the end of a three-day mutual pause in hostilities that had been agreed by Moscow and Kyiv during the weekend visits of US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to the two capitals.
Air Defences Activated
Kyiv's military administration said air-defence systems were activated in response to the attack.
According to Ukraine's emergency services, strikes hit industrial buildings in the suburbs of Boryspil and Fastiv, causing fires and damage to vehicles.
No immediate information was released regarding casualties.
Moratorium Ends
Russia's state news agency TASS confirmed that the three-day moratorium had come to an end.
Under the arrangement, Ukraine had also temporarily suspended its own drone and missile attacks on the Moscow region while the US diplomatic initiative was under way.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue
Witkoff, who made his first visit to Ukraine since the start of the war in 2022, said the trip had enabled "significant progress" towards organising trilateral talks aimed at ending the conflict.
Despite those diplomatic efforts, the resumption of strikes underscores the fragile nature of the current process and the continuing gap between Moscow and Kyiv over the conditions for a possible settlement.
