Turkish Cypriot "prime minister" and National Unity Party (UBP) leader Ünal Üstel has announced plans to revive the former Turkish Cypriot "state" airline in 2028, 16 years after it ceased operations.
Speaking at a meeting of his party's central committee, Üstel said Cyprus Turkish Airlines (KTHY) would return through a public-private partnership model.
Roadmap to be unveiled in October
Üstel said the proposed partnership model, roadmap and further details on the airline's planned return would be made public on 12 October.
Further projects concerning Morphou, Lefka, Kyrenia, Trikomo and Famagusta are also expected to be announced on the same date.
"The people have been longing for KTHY for 16 years. We are ending this longing. Turkish Cypriot Airlines will return to the skies in 2028," Üstel said.
‘Election’ preparations discussed
The UBP central committee meeting also discussed preparations for the forthcoming "elections" in the north and the abolition of mixed voting.
No further details were provided on the planned airline's fleet, routes, financing or operational structure beyond the proposed public-private partnership and 2028 launch date.
