The municipalities of Latsia-Geri and South Nicosia-Idalion are awaiting a meeting with Justice Minister Neophytos Charalambides over plans to build Cyprus’ new Central Prison in the Agios Sozomenos area.
The two municipalities discussed the proposed development at a joint meeting of their mayors and municipal councils on Monday, amid concerns over the consultation process and the suitability of the proposed site.
Meeting with minister expected
Latsia-Geri Mayor Christos Pittaras told CNA that the municipalities have the backing of their council members in their handling of the issue.
During the joint informal meeting, officials discussed a letter sent by the justice minister answering some of their questions.
“He is inviting us to a meeting, which has not yet been scheduled. We will respond and await this meeting to see how things develop and what we will do next,” Pittaras said.
Municipalities question consultation process
Pittaras reiterated that both the municipalities and residents were concerned that plans had been announced without them being informed beforehand.
He also questioned why consultations had taken place with authorities in Mathiatis, which had initially been considered as the location for the new Central Prison, while no equivalent consultation had taken place with the two municipalities, which together have 60,000 residents.
Natura and archaeological concerns
Pittaras said further concerns about the proposed location were emerging, including the presence of a Natura area and an archaeological site.
“We believe there is an incompatibility between the site and the development they want to carry out,” he said.
The municipalities expect these issues to be addressed during their forthcoming meeting with the justice minister before deciding on their next steps.
