A fire that broke out on Thursday at a food outlet in a five-storey building in Limassol was caused by the ignition of accumulated grease inside the building's flue system, the Fire Service said.
Fire stations in Limassol responded to the incident at 9.27am with four fire engines and a hydraulic aerial platform.
Extensive damage reported
The fire was brought under control by 11.30am.
According to the Fire Service, the blaze caused extensive damage to the flues, while heat also affected external installations and equipment located on the roof of the building.
Damage was additionally reported to sections of the exterior wall coating along the route of the flues and to part of the restaurant's electrical installation.
Employee escaped safely
At the time the fire broke out, an employee was inside the premises carrying out preparations.
After noticing the fire, the worker exited the building and moved to a safe area.
Investigation findings
Following examinations at the scene, authorities determined that the fire originated from the ignition of accumulated grease inside the flue system.
The Fire Service also reported that between 6am on 1 October and 6am on 2 October, it responded to 41 incidents nationwide, including 19 fires, 19 special assistance calls and three false alarms.
