Greece and Cyprus have authorised survey work for the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), the planned electricity link between Crete and Cyprus, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Sunday.

In his weekly review of the government's work, Mitsotakis said a permit for survey operations and cable-laying activities, along with the relevant Navtex maritime notice, had been issued on Friday.

He described the developments as important steps towards advancing the implementation of the project.

Mitsotakis stressed that Greece and Cyprus were the countries authorising the survey work for the project, which has been designated as a Project of Common Interest by the European Union and involves French companies.

He said electricity interconnection projects such as the GSI should be recognised as strategic investments that strengthen energy self-sufficiency, regional cooperation and stability.

"Interconnection projects such as the GSI are strategic investments that enhance energy self-sufficiency and regional cooperation and stability, contributing to peace and security in the wider region," Mitsotakis said.

The GSI is intended to establish an electricity connection between Crete and Cyprus, forming part of wider efforts to strengthen energy connectivity in the Eastern Mediterranean.
