Paphos Municipality is introducing an organised marine pollution prevention and response programme for the first time, covering the coastal areas of Paphos and Ierokipia.
The four-month scheme will provide daily patrols to detect pollution early, contain incidents and protect bathing areas and the wider marine ecosystem.
Daily patrols across the coastline
A specialist contractor will conduct patrols seven days a week, with morning and afternoon shifts carried out by staffed vessels equipped for pollution response.
Monitoring will cover waters near designated bathing areas as well as the open sea. Patrol teams will focus on detecting petroleum products, solid waste, sewage, refuse and other pollutants.
Immediate response to pollution incidents
If pollution is detected, the contractor will take immediate containment and clean-up measures using specialist equipment and waste collection systems.
The relevant authorities will be kept informed, while every incident will be recorded and documented to ensure effective monitoring and follow-up.
Four-month contract worth €50,000
The contract is valued at €50,000 plus VAT. The Cyprus Ports Authority will contribute €40,000, with the remaining €10,000 funded by the municipalities of Paphos and Ierokipia.
Paphos Municipality said the programme is intended to reduce response times and strengthen protection of the coastline, bathing areas and marine environment. It added that safeguarding the sea is a priority for residents and the thousands of visitors who use the district’s beaches each day.
