Despite public debate over stronger social support and an announced increase in child benefit, some households remain unable to meet even basic back-to-school costs.
A mother in Nicosia told Politis that her young child still does not have all the clothing needed to return to school on Monday.
The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said the family had received some assistance from friends and acquaintances. However, not all of the child’s needs have been covered.
Expenses exceed family income
The family of three lives on a total monthly income of €800, which the mother said is not enough to cover its basic expenses.
She and her husband both face health problems that prevent them from working. Alongside their daily financial obligations, they must also meet the growing needs of their child.
With the new school term approaching, the mother said she was unable to provide everything the child required for the return to school.
Politis contacted the Social Welfare Services, which said it would handle the family’s case.
