New evidence seized from the private clinic where Giorgos Mazonakis died appears to differ from statements given by the doctors involved, according to Proto Thema. Investigators are focusing on digital records, CCTV footage and the sequence of events before the singer suffered cardiac arrest.
The two doctors from the clinic remain at the Athens Crime Prosecution and Investigation Sub-Directorate as the investigation continues.
Officers handling the case are expected to brief the competent prosecutor on their findings and receive instructions regarding the next procedural steps.
Proto Thema reported that evidence uncovered during the investigation is being treated as potentially incriminating and is under assessment by the authorities.
Digital evidence under examination
A team from the Hellenic Police Forensic Science Division searched the private clinic and seized digital evidence and other material.
According to the report, the inspection indicated that the machine used for the plasmapheresis procedure appeared to have been switched on.
Investigators are examining this finding because it differs from the doctor’s statement that the medical procedure had never begun and that the incident occurred while intravenous catheters were being inserted.
All seized digital data will be analysed to determine whether it contains information about actions taken before or after the singer’s death.
CCTV footage shows different arrival time
Investigators are also examining footage from the clinic’s CCTV system.
Proto Thema reported that the footage shows a discrepancy between the time Mazonakis arrived at the clinic and the time given by the doctors in their statements to police.
The singer appears to have entered the premises shortly after 1pm, rather than at around 4pm as reportedly stated.
Statements and searches of homes
The singer’s sisters, Maria and Vaso Mazonakis, also attended the police security division.
Police searched the doctors’ home in Psychiko, while a separate search was subsequently conducted at Mazonakis’s residence in Panorama Voula, according to Proto Thema.
Investigators examine head injury
The singer was also reported to have had a plaster on his head.
The doctor and a clinic employee reportedly told investigators that Mazonakis had said he became dizzy and fell on a staircase while leaving his home.
The authorities are continuing to assess all available evidence to establish the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
