Five professors are contesting the position of Rector of the University of Cyprus in elections scheduled for 7 October. Candidacies for all three positions on the Rectorate have now been announced.
For the position of Rector, the candidates are Eleni-Tatiani Synodinou, currently Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, and Ioannis Giapintzakis, currently Vice-Rector for International Relations, Finance and Administration. Also contesting the same position are Marina Neofytou, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Sofronis Clerides, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management, and Fofi Constantinidou, a professor in the Department of Psychology and director of the Centre for Applied Neuroscience.
For the position of Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Georgia Panayiotou, Dean of the Graduate School, has submitted her candidacy. The position of Vice-Rector for International Relations, Finance and Administration is being contested by Antonis Ellinas, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education, and Marios Dikaiakos, a professor in the Department of Computer Science.
The pre-election period will include public debates for each of the three positions. Candidates will also be able to present their positions through short videos, podcasts and the university's dedicated online platform. Incumbent Rector Tasos Christofides is completing his second term and is not eligible for re-election. The new Rector is expected to take up duties in mid-December.
