Minister says awards reflect top EU water quality and sustained environmental management through cooperation among authorities

Cyprus has been awarded 56 Blue Flags for beaches and two for marinas in 2026, out of 123 designated bathing sites, the government said on Thursday.

Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Minister Maria Panayiotou said the awards underline the island’s high standards in environmental management and the quality of its bathing waters.

“This distinction represents another significant achievement for the country and confirms the high level of environmental management that has been attained through the cooperation of all competent authorities,” she said at the Blue Flag award ceremony held in Ayia Napa.

Panayiotou said Cyprus ranked first in Europe for bathing water quality in the last three European Commission assessments, attributing the result to consistent and coordinated efforts to protect public health and the environment.

“From generation to generation, Cyprus’ beaches have formed part of our memories, our daily lives, and the image we present of our country to every visitor,” she said, adding that water quality has been a key factor in establishing Cyprus as a reference point at European level.

The Blue Flag is one of the most widely recognised international quality labels for beaches and marinas and is awarded to sites meeting strict environmental, safety and management criteria.

The scheme promotes environmental protection, safe swimming conditions and public awareness, while recognising effective organisation and responsible coastal management, Panayiotou said.

She added that the results deliver tangible benefits for citizens, tourism and the wider economy, while for millions of visitors the Blue Flag serves as “a reliable indicator of quality.”
