The fire that broke out at around 2.55pm on Saturday near the community of Tremithousa in Paphos district has been brought under control, with firefighting forces continuing their efforts to fully extinguish it. Crews prevented the fire from spreading to nearby homes. According to the Department of Forests, the fire has been contained within a small ravine that is difficult to access, which is hampering the work of firefighters. Final extinguishing operations are now under way, with crews carrying water hoses to hard-to-reach spots to put out the remaining pockets of fire.
Ground and air forces deployed
Four fire engines from the Panayia, Geroskipou and Drouseia forest stations were mobilised to tackle the blaze, supported by the Fire Service, firefighting aircraft and a Department of Forests bulldozer. A further four Fire Service engines joined the operation, reinforcing the ground forces. The cause of the fire is not yet known, and there is no further information so far on the extent of the damage.
