Storms and Cooler Weather on the Way

A low-pressure system approaching from the Adriatic is expected to bring thunderstorms, heavy rain and a noticeable drop in temperatures from Wednesday.

Weak low pressure is currently affecting the region, but weather conditions are expected to become increasingly unstable during the middle of the week as the approaching system moves closer to the island.

Today

The weather will be partly cloudy, becoming mostly cloudy at times.

During the morning, isolated showers are expected, with the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm, mainly affecting western and north-western coastal areas.

During the afternoon, developing cloud cover is expected to produce isolated showers and possibly a thunderstorm, primarily over mountainous areas, as well as parts of the north and inland regions.

Winds will initially be variable and light, around 3 Beaufort, before turning mainly south-westerly to north-westerly at 3 to 4 Beaufort. In south-western areas, winds may temporarily strengthen to 4 to 5 Beaufort.

The sea will be generally calm to slight.

Temperatures are expected to reach around:

  • 30C inland
  • 28C on the south and east coasts
  • 27C on the west and north coasts
  • 20C in the higher mountains

Tonight

Periods of locally increased cloud cover may bring isolated showers to coastal areas.

Winds will gradually become downslope and remain light, around 3 Beaufort, while the sea will stay calm to slight.

Temperatures will fall to approximately:

  • 18C inland
  • 21C along the coasts
  • 10C in the higher mountains

Tuesday

The weather will remain partly cloudy, becoming mostly cloudy at intervals.

During the afternoon, isolated showers or thunderstorms are expected, mainly in mountainous areas, inland regions and the north.

Wednesday

Conditions will become mostly cloudy, with periods of local rain and isolated thunderstorms, particularly across the western half of the island.

From the afternoon onwards, a further deterioration is expected, initially affecting western districts before gradually spreading across the rest of Cyprus.

Forecasters say the phenomena could become locally intense and, in some areas, prolonged, raising the likelihood of significant rainfall.

Thursday

Mostly cloudy conditions are expected to continue, with intervals of rain and isolated thunderstorms affecting various parts of the island.

Temperatures to fall below seasonal norms

Temperatures on Tuesday are expected to remain largely unchanged.

However, a gradual cooling trend will set in from Wednesday onwards, with temperatures expected to fall steadily and drop below the seasonal average by Thursday.
