Political Strongholds Shift Across Nicosia District

Analysing the parliamentary election results of 24 May in the Nicosia district reveals notable shifts even in the so-called party strongholds, where certain voting centres delivered overwhelming support, effectively colouring the ballot in their party’s favour.

Although the traditional notion of a “stronghold” has become less defined in recent years due to multiparty competition and the reduced dominance of major parties, there are still cases that meet the criteria.

Such landslide victories are now less common, but they have not disappeared. There is also particular interest in the performance of newer parties, especially in areas linked to their leadership.

In Agros, DISY recorded a dominant victory with 54.4%, far ahead of DIKO in second place with 9.1%, highlighting the area’s strong alignment with the party. ELAM established its own stronghold in Kannavia, securing 69.9% compared with just 8.7% for DISY.

AKEL dominated in Apliki, where it obtained 62.3% against 8.2% for DIKO. The party also maintained strong support in Mitsero, with 44.4% compared with 18.5% for DISY, and in Nisou, where it secured 43.5% against 20% for DISY.

In the village of Xyliatos, DISY recorded a clear lead with 38.3%, while Direct Democracy followed with 8.7%.

Despite failing to enter parliament, DIPA achieved a striking result in Sina Oros, where it secured 55%, with EDEK in second place at 13%. Notably, neither DISY nor AKEL featured among the top two parties in that community.
