The Democratic Alignment (DEPA) will continue to play a role in Cyprus’ political life despite its failure to secure representation in parliament, the party’s Political Bureau decided on Friday following an initial review of the May 24 parliamentary election result.
According to a party statement, DEPA's next steps will be determined during an expanded nationwide conference scheduled to take place in early July.
Disappointing results
The statement said members of the Political Bureau expressed their views and assessments during the meeting in a spirit of self-criticism, while also carrying out an initial analysis of the reasons that led to the party being left outside parliament.
Party officials acknowledged that the election result was “particularly negative” and did not meet the expectations or objectives that had been set.
The Political Bureau also agreed to assume collective responsibility for the outcome and decided that discussions would continue at district level, allowing candidates, party officials, members and supporters to present their views and assessments.
A broader and final evaluation of the election result is expected to take place during the expanded nationwide conference in early July, when the party will also decide on its future course and political strategy.
Despite the setback, the party stressed that it intends to remain active and maintain both a role and a voice in Cyprus’ political affairs, regardless of the election outcome.
