The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín, is scheduled to hold a second meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides on Friday at 6pm, while a separate meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman is due to take place on Saturday.
According to information obtained by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), the meetings will serve as a continuation of the initial discussions Holguín held with the two leaders on Monday.
Renewed efforts
On Tuesday, the envoy also held separate meetings with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot negotiators. No follow-up meetings have yet been scheduled with the negotiators, and the possibility of a joint meeting between them was not discussed ahead of the upcoming separate meetings with the two leaders.
Sources told CNA that Holguín's discussions with the negotiators focused on preparations for an informal multilateral meeting expected to take place in late July or early August.
According to the same sources, the talks are centred exclusively on substantive issues related to the process, with no discussion of confidence-building measures.
Holguín's latest contacts form part of ongoing efforts by the United Nations to prepare the ground for renewed engagement on the Cyprus issue and a possible broader informal gathering involving the parties concerned later this summer.
