Greece remains ready to contribute constructively to a successful informal meeting aimed at restarting negotiations on the Cyprus issue, the Greek Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, reiterating that its steadfast objective remains a settlement within the parameters set by the UN Security Council.
In a statement, the ministry welcomed remarks by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, saying he "remains firmly committed to the Good Offices Mission entrusted to him by the United Nations Security Council to achieve a comprehensive, just and sustainable settlement of the Cyprus issue within the framework of the United Nations parameters".
CBMs 'essential'
The ministry also welcomed the announcement of an informal expanded meeting aimed at relaunching negotiations on the basis of the agreed framework under UN auspices.
"Greece, in full coordination with the Republic of Cyprus and recognising the importance of maintaining the momentum that has developed on the Cyprus issue over the past more than two years, remains ready to contribute constructively to a successful informal meeting," the statement said.
It added that Athens supports all efforts and initiatives aimed at building confidence, describing confidence-building measures as an essential prerequisite for the resumption of negotiations.
The Foreign Ministry reiterated that Greece's consistent objective remains a settlement of the Cyprus issue within the parameters established by the UN Security Council and the reunification of the island.
