The President of the Cyprus Olympic Committee, Georgios Chrysostomou, has congratulated Cyprus' athletes, coaches and sports federations following the country's participation in the 2026 Mediterranean Games and the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
In a message issued after the conclusion of the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Chrysostomou said the performances of Cypriot athletes reflected the continued progress of Cypriot sport at international level and highlighted the contribution of everyone involved in the national delegations.
Largest Mediterranean Games delegation
Chrysostomou noted that Cyprus competed at the 20th Mediterranean Games "Taranto 2026" with 145 athletes across 24 sports, making it the country's largest-ever delegation to the event.
He said the overall performance of the athletes once again demonstrated the strength, consistency and progress of Cypriot sport on the international stage.
According to the Cyprus Olympic Committee president, the organisation is particularly proud of the athletes and expressed its appreciation to all those who worked with dedication and contributed to the successful participation of the Cypriot delegation.
Commonwealth Games participation
The statement also referred to Cyprus' presence at the 23rd Commonwealth Games "Glasgow 2026", where 36 athletes represented the country in six sports.
Chrysostomou said the two international competitions showcased the high standard, talent, competitiveness and sportsmanship of Cypriot athletes.
He added that the performances confirmed that Cypriot sport continues to develop and compete successfully at international level.
Recognition event planned
The Cyprus Olympic Committee announced that it will organise a special event in the coming period to honour athletes, coaches, sports federations and all those who contributed to the country's participation in both competitions.
Chrysostomou thanked all members of the delegations and congratulated them on their efforts, dedication and performances, describing them as a source of pride for Cyprus.
