North Korea has pledged to continue expanding its nuclear arsenal, arguing that Washington’s “hostile policy” remains unchanged. In a statement carried by state news agency KCNA, the Foreign Ministry also dismissed the prospect of any easing of regional tensions.
Nuclear policy remains unchanged
The ministry said the country’s nuclear weapons were “the ultimate guarantee of its sovereignty” and would continue to be strengthened.
It added that “there is no point” in expecting regional tensions to ease, stressing that North Korea’s policy towards the United States had not changed.
Trilateral exercises called a threat
The statement also criticised maritime military exercises announced by the United States, which are scheduled to take place from September 7 to 11 with Japan and South Korea.
The exercises “pose a threat to the DPRK and the countries of the region”, the ministry said, using the initials of the country’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
