Sixteen people were killed and 28 others injured in a bus accident in Egypt’s South Sinai on Wednesday, according to the country’s Ministry of Health.
The accident occurred on the road connecting Dahab and Nuweiba, two popular tourist destinations in the region.
Cause remains under investigation
The circumstances surrounding the accident remain unclear, with authorities continuing their investigation.
South Sinai is known for its marine biodiversity, natural landscapes and mountain hiking trails.
Egypt’s road safety record
Road accidents are frequent in Egypt and are often attributed to dangerous driving, poor maintenance of vehicles and roads, and inadequate enforcement of road safety laws.
Nearly 6,000 people were killed in road accidents in Egypt in 2025, according to the country’s statistical agency.
Last month, at least 18 people, most of them teenagers, died in a collision involving two trucks carrying workers in northern Egypt.
