Katie Zacharia stepped down less than a week after taking the role amid scrutiny over her first briefing and questions about her legal credentials.

Katie Zacharia has resigned as White House press secretary just five days after taking up the post.

Her departure followed criticism of her first press briefing and controversy over claims regarding her legal qualifications. Zacharia later acknowledged that she had not passed a US bar exam, after initially facing questions about her status as an attorney.

President Donald Trump suggested earlier on Friday that she should reconsider the role, saying she did not need to endure the treatment she had received from the media.

Before leaving, Zacharia praised Trump on social media and said it had been an honour to work for him.

The resignation marks one of the shortest tenures in a senior White House communications role, surpassing the previous record held by Anthony Scaramucci, who served for 10 days during Trump's first term.
