Zelensky Condemns Sanctions Freeze

The Ukrainian president said easing economic pressure on Russia would only encourage further aggression and urged allies to maintain sanctions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly criticised Donald Trump's decision to suspend new US sanctions against Russia, arguing that the move effectively rewards Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The suspension of US sanctions, the easing of pressure on the aggressor, the economic rewards for Putin, all of this only encourages him to continue attacking,” Zelensky said.

He warned that reducing economic pressure on Moscow would embolden Russia and called on Ukraine's allies to maintain sanctions and continue exerting pressure on the Kremlin.

The comments came a day after Trump signed an executive order suspending wide-ranging US sanctions and tariffs targeting Russian energy revenues, just two days before the measures were due to take effect.

The decision has intensified concerns in Kyiv that Washington may be shifting its approach towards Moscow as Russia's war against Ukraine enters its fifth year.
