Serious political and institutional questions have been raised following the publication of a video that allegedly records discussions between prospective investors and individuals with close links to the Presidential Palace, according to statements by Dionysis Dionysiou, director of Politis, speaking on Politis Radio this morning.

Referring to the controversy sparked by the eight-minute video circulating on the X platform, Dionysiou said the questions that arise are reasonable and that the Presidency has a duty to provide clear answers. He noted that the government has sought to frame the issue as part of a hybrid warfare effort and an attempt at destabilisation, citing even intelligence information. However, he stressed that this is a matter visible to all, capable of being assessed and judged on the available facts.

Political responsibility and the Presidency

According to Dionysiou, the core and most serious problem is political in nature and affects the country at a critical moment, just days after Cyprus assumed the presidency of the Council of the European Union. He argued that the issue does not primarily concern private individuals or technocrats mentioned in the public debate, but rather the role of figures operating close to the President and the way power is exercised.

He said political responsibility must be assumed and resignations should follow, describing the meetings shown in the video as highly problematic and politically reprehensible. Dionysiou made explicit reference to the Director of the President’s Office, who appears in the footage, stating clearly that resignations are required.

The video and reported meetings

Addressing the video itself, Dionysiou acknowledged that it has been edited, something he said is common practice in audiovisual material. He added that the newspaper contacted individuals named in the case, who are private citizens, and they stated that they had been in contact with the group in question until November.

According to information provided by those involved, multiple meetings took place last November in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands with the company Stratix Wealth, during which an energy-sector investment plan worth €150 million was discussed. The video also includes references to an American investor who is alleged to have donated €500,000 to the state.

Calls for clarification and transparency

Dionysiou said the Presidency must clarify the position of the Director of the President’s Office, meaning that the President himself must explain what is taking place. He also said details should be provided regarding funds received during the presidential election campaign, as well as money that entered the account associated with the First Lady.

Legal and institutional implications

Politis' director underlined that the case gives rise to both political and institutional responsibilities and that the Attorney General of the Republic of Cyprus should examine whether there are any criminal dimensions. He added that the information made public suggests an intention to breach limits on election campaign financing.

In his closing remarks, Dionysiou said that what matters to society is whether the events described are true. He warned that the cost for the Presidency and for Nikos Christodoulides personally is significant, as the message being sent to the public is that there may be an issue of corruption at the highest level of executive power.
