Attorney-general George Savvides announced on Tuesday the appointment of an independent criminal investigator to assist police investigations on the controversial video disseminated on media platform X.

Invoking the powers conferred by Article 4(2) of the Criminal Procedure Law, Savvides appointed as an Independent Criminal Investigator Andreas Paschalides, former Supreme Court Judge and former head of the Independent Authority for the Investigation of Allegations and Complaints against the Police.

Paschalides, 79-years-old from the Paphos district, has been appointed to conduct investigations in cooperation with the Police into any possible criminal offence committed by any person in connection with the video uploaded on the social media platform ‘X’ to the account under the name ‘Emily Thompson’ on 8 January 2026.

“According to the terms of reference of Mr Paschalides’ appointment, the investigation will cover any issue related to the video, including its content, authenticity, origin, the circumstances and motives of its production and publication, as well as any other matter arising from the investigation,” said Savvides.

The Attorney-general said the investigation must be completed as soon as possible and, in any event, within three months.
