Deputy Minister of European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, met with European Parliament Vice President, Victor Negrescu, to discuss priorities for Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The meeting focused on the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), the Cyprus EU Council Presidency Secretariat said.
Raouna described the meeting as productive. She emphasised that close, transparent, and constructive cooperation with the European Parliament is essential for the Presidency. She said delivering the new MFF is a key priority.
“We have a shared responsibility and a shared commitment to deliver a new Multiannual Financial Framework that is robust, balanced, and comprehensive,” Raouna said. She added that the framework must address emerging challenges in a complex geopolitical and economic environment while ensuring social cohesion and fairness within the EU.
Negrescu expressed confidence in Cyprus’ role in advancing MFF negotiations. He noted that the EU’s next long-term budget will have a significant impact on the Union’s future. He said the budget must focus on citizen priorities and help Europe remain competitive.
The vice president also highlighted the need to address current security challenges while keeping cohesion a priority.
Concluding the meeting, Negrescu voiced strong support for Raouna’s agenda across multiple EU files. He noted that cooperation had already begun in recent weeks, producing early results. “We see more dynamism, ambition, and availability for dialogue. We will continue this work together,” he said.
