Authorities investigate causes as Justice Minister visits facility

A new inmate death has shaken the Central Prisons, which are already under pressure.

According to the Police, the inmate was found dead in his cell.

The causes and circumstances of the death are under investigation.

The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Konstantinos Fytiris, is at the Central Prisons to be briefed on the inmate’s death.

The young inmate was found dead in his cell in the new wing of the Central Prisons, which was inaugurated in December 2024. The incident occurred in Wing 11, which has a capacity of 240 inmates and was inaugurated last year by the President of the Republic, in the presence of the former Minister of Justice, Marios Hartsiotis.

According to more recent information, the young inmate, a foreign national, appears to have taken his own life, with the possibility of criminal activity having been completely ruled out.
