A prisoner being escorted by police to Larnaca General Hospital for medical examinations reportedly attacked a police officer, causing injuries.

According to Larnaca Police spokesperson Spyros Chrysostomou, the incident occurred while the officer was on duty at the hospital. The prisoner, who had been transferred for routine medical checks, created a disturbance and physically assaulted the officer.

The spokesperson stated that the 27-year-old prisoner, held at the Menogeia migrant detention centre, was escorted by police to the hospital on Friday, 6 February for medical examination. After the check-up, when an officer attempted to reapply handcuffs, the prisoner allegedly headbutted the officer in the face.

Officer injured, prisoner restrained

Colleagues rushed to assist the officer, and force was reportedly necessary to restrain the prisoner and secure the handcuffs. The injured officer received on-site medical attention, sustaining a laceration to the right eyebrow and cuts to the right hand.

The prisoner was returned to his detention cell, and the case is under investigation by the Larnaca Minor Offences Department.
