The scale of movement across Cyprus’ divide is striking. Since the crossing points opened in 2003, more than 190 million crossings have been recorded on both sides of the Green Line, underlining a reality that some still choose to ignore.

Data released by the Turkish Cypriot side points to sustained interaction between thousands of people over the years, even in the absence of any clear prospect for a political settlement.

In the first quarter of 2026, crossings towards the Republic of Cyprus slightly exceeded those to the north for the first time, with 1,404,608 movements compared with 1,400,480 in the opposite direction.

Taken together, the figures offer a consistent indication that communication and movement remain embedded in daily life, even within an unresolved and widely contested status quo.
