A Yellow Warning for strong winds is in effect across Cyprus, as a low-pressure system moving northeast from the Black Sea temporarily impacts the region. The Department of Meteorology warns that sustained winds may reach 7 Beaufort, with gusts climbing to 9 Beaufort. The warning remains valid until 16:00.
Low pressure and dust
The weather system is accompanied by dense dust in the atmosphere, expected to persist until midday. Authorities advise vulnerable groups to take precautions.
Today’s conditions are expected to be mostly cloudy, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms. Snowfall is forecast in the higher mountainous areas. Weather phenomena are expected to weaken and gradually subside later in the afternoon.
Winds will blow mainly southwesterly to westerly, strong to very strong at 5 to 6 Beaufort, and locally up to 6 to 7 Beaufort in windward areas. Gusts may reach 9 to 10 Beaufort. Sea conditions will be rough to very rough, and locally stormy in exposed coastal areas.
Temperatures will rise to around 18°C inland and along the coasts, and 6°C in the higher mountains.
Tonight
Conditions will turn partly cloudy, with isolated showers mainly affecting the western half of the island. Snow or sleet is possible in higher mountainous areas.
Winds will shift southwesterly to northwesterly, moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort, and locally up to 6 Beaufort along the coasts. The sea will remain rough, gradually easing to moderate in southern and eastern coastal areas.
Temperatures will drop to 9°C inland, around 13°C along the western and northern coasts, 11°C in the remaining coastal areas, and 4°C in higher mountainous regions, where frost may form locally.
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, periods of locally increased cloud cover are expected. Temperatures will gradually rise through Saturday, climbing above average seasonal values.
