A meeting between Ayia Napa Mayor Christos Zannettou and the British Bases leadership served to reassure the local authority that there was no reason for concern regarding developments in the Middle East.

According to an announcement by the Ayia Napa Municipality, Zannettou met on Wednesday with Fleur Thomas, Chief Operating Officer of the British bases, along with Maria Kyriakidou‑Pieris, Civil Administrator of the Dhekelia Base.

Bases officials assured the Ayia Napa mayor and the deputy mayors of Avgorou, Achna, Liopetri and Sotira that there was no reason for concern in Cyprus arising from developments in the Middle East.

The meeting was also attended by the deputy mayors of Liopetri, Avgorou and Achna.

Security and stability

During the briefing, “the competent authorities presented the situation in the region responsibly and with full documentation, stressing that there is no reason for concern for Cyprus, confirming at the same time the high level of security and stability prevailing on the island.”

The announcement notes that particular reference was made to the fact that the families of British nationals living in Cyprus “continue their daily lives as normal, even in areas close to the military bases – a factor which further reinforces the sense of security.”

Keep calm and carry on

Speaking after the meeting, Mayor Zannettou said: “The information we received was clear and reassuring – there is no reason for concern in Cyprus. In periods of international uncertainty, we must all show calmness, responsibility and seriousness, conveying the correct messages to society and to visitors to our country.”

He also underlined that “Cyprus remains a safe, stable and reliable destination,” adding that the Ayia Napa municipality “is working responsibly to safeguard public confidence and support the tourism season, strengthening the image of our country as a place of safety and hospitality.”
