The number of people and companies registered for issuing dishonoured cheques in Cyprus fell markedly in 2025, as cheque use continued to decline and electronic payments became more widespread.
According to the 2025 report of the management committee of the Central Information Register for the Issuers of Dishonoured Cheques, the average monthly number of registrations dropped by 47% in the main register and by 23% in the preliminary list compared with 2024.
The report, published by the Central Bank of Cyprus on Wednesday, said the trend reflects the continued move away from cheques as a payment method and the growing preference for digital transactions.
In 2025, the average monthly number of registrations of natural and legal persons stood at nine in the main register and 10 in the preliminary list. In 2024, the corresponding figures were 17 and 13.
During the year, the committee held 19 meetings and examined 202 requests for the deletion of natural and legal persons from the register.
Looking ahead, the report said the main objective for 2026 is to launch a project to replace the current electronic CIR system with a new platform that will meet modern technological and regulatory requirements.
