House Speaker Annita Demetriou stressed the need to continue the struggle for reunification during the annual memorial for the heroes of Troulloi, held on Sunday.
In a post on social media, Demetriou said the sacrifice of the community's heroes represents an enduring legacy of freedom, love of country and responsibility toward future generations. Those who fell at Troulloi, she said, "did not simply pass through history, but themselves became part of it," leaving behind the principles and values of freedom, patriotism and longing for a better tomorrow, and she added that this legacy calls for the struggle for reunification to continue.
The annual national memorial for the community's heroes was held on Sunday at the Church of Ayios Mamas in Troulloi. Demetriou delivered the memorial address, followed by a memorial service and the laying of wreaths at the monument to the hero Andreas Sourouklis.
In her post, Demetriou said a small place becomes truly great not through its size, but through its people, those who loved it more than themselves, who fought and sacrificed for their homeland.
She added that historical memory does not belong only to the past, but lives on in the present and becomes a responsibility for the future, a responsibility that demands the struggle continue with faith in eventual vindication, liberation and the reunification of the homeland.
