Russia launched an attack on Ukraine overnight using nearly 500 drones and 40 missiles, targeting energy and non-military infrastructure, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today.

“If Russia turns even the Christmas and New Year period into a time for destroyed homes, burnt apartments, and damaged energy facilities, then this sick activity can only be met with truly strong measures,” Zelensky wrote on X, calling on the US and Europe to increase pressure on Moscow.

The Ukrainian President made the comments ahead of his departure for the United States, where he is expected to meet with US President Donald Trump to discuss a plan aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

“Russia does not want to end the war and seeks to seize every opportunity to inflict further suffering on Ukraine and to increase pressure on others through the world,” Zelensky said, following the attack on Kyiv and its surrounding areas that killed one person.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said today that a third of Kyiv is now without heating following Russia’s large-scale overnight assault.

“The only response from Russia to peace efforts is brutal attacks using thousands of drones and missiles against Kyiv and other cities and regions,” Sybiha wrote on X.

Temperatures in the capital are around zero degrees Celsius today.
