A statement by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday has raised fresh questions over Washington’s approach to Venezuela, after he claimed the country’s “temporary authorities” will deliver up to 50 million barrels of sanctioned, “high-quality” oil to the United States.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump said Venezuela would hand over between 30 million and 50 million barrels, describing the move as a transfer to the US.
‘I will control the revenues,’ Trump says
Trump added that the oil would be sold at market prices and claimed he would personally oversee the revenues from the sales.
He said the money would be controlled by him, as president, to ensure it is used “to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States.”
