Body Recovered in Istanbul’s Bosphorus Linked to Missing Russian Athlete

Physical characteristics reported to match those of the missing athlete

A body was found in the Bosphorus in Istanbul during the early hours of the morning, with Turkish authorities examining whether it belongs to Russian swimmer Nikolai Svetsnikov, who has been missing since 24 August following his participation in the 37th Bosphorus Intercontinental Swimming Race.

The body was discovered in the stretch of sea between Galatasaray and the Bebek shoreline after a vessel alerted the authorities. It was recovered by coastguard teams. According to reports, the physical characteristics are consistent with those of the missing athlete, and it is said that the person was wearing swimming trunks.

The family has been informed and a DNA sample is expected to be taken to confirm the identity. Investigations are continuing.
