The designation of a “white zone” in Category A industrial zones in the municipal districts of Idalion, Geri and Tseri safeguards public health and reduces environmental impacts, according to the Nicosia District Self-Government Organisation (EOA Nicosia).

The decision was approved by the Council of Ministers and the relevant decrees were published on 20 March.

Suspension of new Category A developments

According to the organisation, the decision followed documented proposals and pressure from EOA Nicosia, local authorities and affected residents, aiming to limit activities and uses with a high level of nuisance and to safeguard the quality of life of nearby communities.

Under the decrees, the siting of new Category A industrial developments, which involve increased levels of disturbance, will be suspended for a period of two years, until 19 March 2028.

At the same time, the establishment of developments with a high degree of environmental impact will be restricted in the affected areas. Only specific exceptions will be permitted, such as additions or modifications that do not increase the capacity of existing lawful industrial units.

Basis for redesign of industrial zones

EOA Nicosia states that the regulation creates conditions for more balanced urban planning and sets the basis for the redesign of industrial zones in the district as part of the upcoming revision of local development plans.

“The Nicosia District Self-Government Organisation, responding to requests from citizens and local authorities and taking into account modern spatial and urban planning policies, promoted targeted interventions and proposals, contributing substantially to the adoption of this decision,” the organisation said.

EOA Nicosia added that it will continue to intervene institutionally with the aim of safeguarding quality of life, protecting environmental quality and public health, and ensuring the rational distribution of land uses within the capital’s urban area.
